What is CBD?
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the hemp plant. Recent history has seen an increase in public interest as well as scientific attention towards CBD, which is known for health benefits ranging from pain relief and treatment of sleep and mood disorders to fortified cardiovascular health, brain health, skin and bone health, and illness prevention — among many others.
CBD is considered very safe for the treatment of both humans and animals and is a popular choice of natural medicine for people and their pets. Oftentimes, there is some misconception about hemp, which is a closely related cousin of the marijuana plant.
What is the Difference between Hemp and Marijuana?
Although in the same family, hemp and marijuana are two entirely different plants. While hemp produces CBD, marijuana produces a compound known as THC or tetrahydrocannabinol. It is this compound found in marijuana that causes psychoactive effects when consumed, resulting in the sensation of being “high”. Hemp, on the other hand, is CBD-dominant and produces little to no THC when sourced from pure and CBD-concentrated origins such as those from Burns CBD.
CBD and THC act on completely different receptors in the brain and central nervous system. While THC causes psychoactive effects and gets you “high”, CBD does not, and its effects on the body and central nervous system result in health benefits such as those stated above.
How Do You Get CBD from Hemp?
As with any compound extracted from a plant, obtaining high-quality, pure CBD relies on the type of plant and the conditions that it’s sourced from. Hemp found in nature may contain both CBD and THC, and in the past, CBD was sourced from hemp plants that were not CBD dominant. To achieve this, it was necessary to process the plant using more contaminants, resulting in less potent and impure CBD.
Today, we’ve realized that the best way to extract pure CBD is by getting it from CBD-dominant hemp grown in clean and natural conditions — and for the sole purpose of producing CBD. While most commercial CBD extracts are obtained from commercial hemp (the same hemp that produces fabrics, paper, and hemp plastics), we grow our very own CBD-dominant hemp strains to produce the cleanest, purest and most complete CBD extract possible.
Commercial CBD is often mass-produced and grown in poor-quality soil (oftentimes overseas), where it absorbs toxins from the ground and results in a contaminated, impure CBD extract. At Burns CBD we source our hemp from nutrient-rich soil which results in a pure, toxin-free and highly-effective extract.
How Do You Get CBD-Dominant Hemp?
Many hemp strains found in nature are CBD-dominant, while gene selection and plant cross-breeding have also produced CBD-dominant hemp strains for the purposes of creating pure CBD extract.
